Yesterday at 9am I decided to call BAM to see if any tickets were released for Sufjan Stevens' "The BQE" world premiere; 2 seats were available, 10th row orchestra, middle. Without hesitation, I grabbed them and called Chris to tell him we were taking a 2 hour break from Savory to get cultured.
We decided on a pre-theatre bite at Franny's on Flatbush Ave. They don't accept reservations but being that we were eating on the early side (6:30 p.m.) there were plenty tables as well as space at the bar to chose from. Franny's has a great cocktail menu and wine list. Chris had the pickled beet martini and I had a dry Lambrusco.
We ordered:
Pork Cheek and Beef Tongue Terrine $9
Wood-Roasted Octopus with Salsa Verde $16
Tomato, Olives, Garlic and Anchovies $13
Fior di Latte Gelato $8
Home made Amaro #2 $10
We decided to sit at the bar because we only had about an hour to eat. We asked that all the food come out at once, or as it was ready and poof, 10 minutes later we were eating. Everything we ordered was good. Chris enjoyed the terrine more than I did and I enjoyed the anchovies on the pizza more than he did. As far as neighborhood spots go, Franny's is delightful but a little on the expensive side to be a regular. For our light meal, we spent $100 with tax and tip. If we were to do it up right by ordering something from the meats, 2 apps, 2 pastas, 1 dessert and a glass of wine each, it would have come out to something more like $127. Perhaps for some that's still moderate, it's all a matter of perspective.
Even so, we look forward to returning for a cocktail at the bar and snacks of their house cured meats, maybe even a proper dinner at a table.
As for "The BQE," brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. As the curtain came down at the end of the piece, I grabbed my phone to text my sister, "Beg, borrow or steal - you have to see this."
