As a native New Englander living in San Francisco in the late 1990's I sometimes found myself craving east coast summer staples like fried clams and lobster to no avail. Of course, SF has its own share of delicious seafood (visit Swan Oyster Depot for some of the best), which I grew to love nearly as much as my east coast favorites, but getting my hands on a bucket of steamers was no easy task.
All that changed this past April when the team behind SF hotspots Salt House and Town Hall opened Anchor and Hope in the South of Market neighborhood. The menu features northeast classics like lobster rolls and fried Ipswich clams as well as some original dishes that take advantage of local resources such as sea scallops with Napa cabbage, raisins and almonds, and warm sea urchin with mashed potatoes and Dungeness crab. It's nice to know that on our next visit to SF when we're down at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market and the wait at Boulette's Larder and The Slanted Door are totally out of control that we can walk a few short blocks and indulge in a few far away favorites.
