Old in NYC: JG Melon

JG Melon burger

For the past two Monday evenings, Chris and I have had reason to be on the UES at dinnertime and on both occasions, decided to eat at JG Melon. The last time I grabbed a bite at Melon's I was high school and only really remembered it as a hamburger joint that I never felt entirely comfortable in. Times have changed or at least I have.

In the dining room, we noticed the cross section of older married couples from the tony neighborhood blending in with young whippersnappers out on dates. There were regulars and there were tourists. At the bar 30-something former frat guys were saddled up next to a single diner enjoying a burger. At 8:30 on a Monday night, the joint was packed. The wait for a table was 30 to 40 minutes, but once you got that seat, it was worth the time spent lingering on the sidelines.

On our first Monday we choose bacon-cheeseburgers and a side of cottage fries. On the second Monday we ordered regular cheeseburgers and a Mozzarella in Carozza to split. Both times we tried the burgers they were perfect. Juicy, cooked to order and as tasty as a broiled burger could be. Splitting the mozzarella dish was a good way to start. This sandwich is similar to a grilled cheese but served on savory french toast bread. Our drink of choice: the Bloody Mary.

Whether you live in the city or are just passing through, JG Melon is one of those storied NYC restaurants that should be experienced. And with everyone watching their wallets, now is as good a time as ever to head over and grab a burger and a bloody. The local color is worth the price alone.

I am always happy to hear of quality hamburger places, and this one looks good. Just curious...what exactly are cottage fries? I've never heard of them before!

I found another post of the history of Inn-n-Outs and hamburgers...thought I'd share. Cheers!
