Critic Reviews

The buschenschank - or its spirit, conviviality and cuisine - is the inspiration for Cafe Katja, a tiny spot on the Lower East Side, with a menu of simple Austrian fare that is downright cheap, and an excellent selection of beers, wines and schnapps. - Peter Meehan

Take your cues from the menu's glossary at this lamp-lit LES Austro-Hungarian eatery: The Landjaeger - a spicy dried sausage - and Liptauer...

Johannes Kepler used the figure panis quadragesimalisthe Lenten pretzel`to illustrate the knotty path certain planets would have to take to circle the Earth, but supposing the pretzel, not the sun, is the center of the universe, then Erwin Schrottner, the owner of Cafe Katja, might be its Copernicus, the guy who has it all figured out. - Lauren Collins

Nice little place in the LES. Simple Austrian dishes. Size of the portions is good, quality also. Nice selection of wine and beer. I recommend the Kracher dessertwine, which goes for cheap 8 dollars to some cheese!
