Critic Reviews

The audience for Delicatessen isn't so much grizzled epicures sniffing out luxurious treasures as it is frazzled night crawlers looking for foodstuffs that double as alcohol sponges. - Frank Bruni

The crowd skews young and pretty at Delicatessen in Soho, a lively new comfort-food initiative from the folks at Cafeteria. And what a surprise, this grub is good. - Gael Greene

Time Out New York Critic's Pick 01/01/98

From the folks who brought us Chelsea's Cafeteria comes this loud, aggressively fashionable Soho spot.

For a shopping lunch in Soho, I suppose you could do worse. But we can’t recommend the bizarre nightclub deli scene. - Adam Platt

Never eat here! I have never been to a restaurant where the servers don't want to work! We had the worst service ever!!! I can't believe I even left a tip! Horrible place!

The BEST part about Delicatessen is the space, light, airy, it is beautiful. I wish I could say the same for the service. My party (4) were greeted with attitude by the front host...the waiter, though very nice with good intentions incorrectly put the bill on on credit card , didn't split the check as directed and pocketed the cash. When I called to have thie resolved the host said that manager was busy and their was nothing he could do. Still waiting...Good food - poor service - the story of eating in SOHO.

I have been watching this corner of soho change. Bubba's diner filled a niche with the average folk that frequent soho or work in soho, so, sad that it vanished. But,I walked past yesterday and was stunned to see such a cool and beeezy renovation. Very South Beach. Two gents were chowing down on something and had their dog teathered at their feet. The place was packed. I wonder how it will close up for the colder months? I passed a compliment on the the hostess while grabbing a card and I received nothing, not even a glance. Snobby little B---h. If you are gonna build a glass house on one of the busiest coners in soho...anyway. I will never eat there. BE NICE, SoHo is NOT just for rich Europeans. And YOU are JUST a HOSTESS.

The fried chicken is the excellent, juicy and tender. The lemonade is good too although the serving is very small (same thing with all soft drink).

The server scolded us for seating ourselves, however the host had seated us and neglected to tell her. We waited 18 mins to get her to come over and only AFTER one of us chased her down and told her to come take our order. Food was lame. Service was lame. Crowd was lame, whatever.

Don't bother with the risotto - loads of water in it. Chef reckoned it was excess oil. Comes to something when a chef cannot tell the difference between the two. Had to add parmesan as I think they had forgotten. Didn't see the waitress once she had brought our food to the table - other than my request for extra parmesan. Although, she was standing around having a laugh with her colleagues. Wine - Pinot Grigio from Italy (I think) was off!! Make sure you taste it first !! Not worth the price at all - quite a pretentious place. There are much better eateries in this area.

I love the look of the place and its pleasant to eat there but I have always found the food mediocre and the service....well there isn't any. But today I had lunch there and my bill was $20.29. I gave the waiter $40.00 cash and he returned with $10 in singles. When I asked why I had been short changed he simply replied that there was no "change" in the registers. When I asked how a restaurant could have not cash in the register (it was 3 PM and the restaurant opens around 10 AM) he offered to take $1 out of his pocket. Needless to say I refused and short changed his tip by 71 cents. I was so angry and stormed out and didn't even try to get the manager to help. I live in the neighbor and I eat there twice a week! To be treated like this is astonishing even if I wasn't a regular. Guess I will think twice the next time I want to eat out.
