Critic Reviews

The splendid dishes that Felidia continues to turn out - dishes that hit a midpoint between regal and rustic that's all their own - suggest that Ms. Bastianich, edging up on her 60th birthday, hasn't lost sight of her beginnings. So does her frequent presence in the narrow, charming East Side townhouse that the restaurant inhabits. - Frank Bruni

New York Magazine Critic's Pick

Nicotra deserves credit for a new breath of energy at the range. Sauces are lighter, pastas still wonderful, and entrees get deftly tweaked. - Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld

Time Out New York Critic's Pick

The intimate dining room, punctuated with dark wood accents and handsome leather chairs, is as alluring as it was when Lidia Bastianich first opened Felidia in 1981....

Fortunato Nicotra is the true star at Felidia. Creating mouth watering dishes that would make grandma cry. There salumi platter is one of a true artist. Try dishes like Blk/White fett with cuddle fish, almond paste, oven roasted tomtoes. Well worth my trip

We had a lovely anniversary dinner here last night. We ordered the vegetarian tasting menu for two and were treated to four courses of incredible goodness. 1st: butternut squash with broccoli rabe and soft fresh mozzarella topped with toasted almond slivers, 2nd: red quinoa risotto with shitakes and fontina, 3rd: a house specialty, ravioli with pecorino romano and pear and pepper, and finally 4th: the creamiest polenta ever with herbs and topped with perfectly cooked mushrooms which were finished with a touch of tomato sauce. For desert we had a flight of treats which you can see here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/simplesocialgraces/2978607992/ A wonderful evening!

Truly the most delicious meal I've had in years. Lidia really knows what she's doing at Felidia. Beautiful, warm decor matched with flavorful food. My favorite was the Octopus appetizer and the porcini tagliatelle with duck. I couldn't stop talking about it the next day which is always the sign of a great meal!

A good but underwhelming experience. My expectations driven by the reputation of the place were maybe too high. I had a three course meal (antipasti, primi, secondi) and found that the food was too rich and heavy for three courses. By the secondi, I felt myself weighed down; not by the amount of food but by what felt like a barrage of richness. I had the octopus (one of the best dishes I've had anywhere, ever - highly recommended! You get raw carpaccio over burrata cheese and cooked larger pieces of Octopus - the quality of the ingredient was perfection), a rissoto special with what I believe was pesto and parmesean mixed in and strips of somewhat-cooked prosciutto over the top (tasty for a few bites then overwhelmingly rich) and the quail. The quail was fabulous, it was of the highest quality and it was cooked as perfectly as you could (the parsnip puree on the side was sweet and creamy, it tasted almost decadent, a word I never thought I'd use to describe parsnips!). Even though the dishes were tasty overall, they were so rich and heavy that a third of the way through my second course, I was already feeling overwhelmed (they do get credit for proper portion size and appropriate lag time between courses). The dishes on their own were definitely excellent though (the special not so much). They just didn't make a cohesive meal which built from one dish to the next. The service was good, it was attentive without being intrusive. Warm and friendly but the interactions could be a bit forced and uncomfortable at times. Though ours waiters comprehensive knowledge of the dishes and of Italian food in general was spectacular. If you had a question, he could answer it. The atmosphere was too quiet for my taste for an Italian restaurant. I come from a boisterous Italian family and the atmosphere made me feel a bit restrained, as did the small room (was on first floor). Though I think this would be a great place for a quiet romantic dinner, just not a larger party in a have-fun mood - the vibe brings the energy down. It's a tad overpriced, I think. I'll be back for the octopus though, it was really that good.

I have eaten at so many great restaurants around the world but I think the Sunday Supper at Felidia was the best meal I have ever had. The freshness, flavor, and abundance in each course were AMAZING.
