Combining Vietnamese flavors with other Asian influences and many of the go-to meats of the moment, Mai House produces an unusually appealing roster of dishes, the best of which make statements at once louder and more nuanced than those at less thoughtful restaurants with roots in Southeast Asia. - Frank Bruni
The latest eatery from restaurateurs Drew Nieporent (Nobu, Tribeca Grill) and Michael Huynh (Bao 111, Bao Noodles) yields some nice, if pricey, gourmet adaptations...
Had dinner tonight at Mai House. We got there early (7:30pm) and it didn't really begin to fill up until 9pm. The Red River cocktail was YUMMY as was the food. Aps...Mushroom spring rolls and frog leg lollipops. The balance of mushrooms was great! Entrees... The duck was tasty but the spicy beef cheek stew, divine! The beef went well with my glass of Pinot Noir (also YUMMY!) Dessert we had the Dorian cake and a sampler of 4 ice creams/sorbets (lychee/tangerine sorbet, cinnamon Ice cream, ginger ice cream (with chocolate covered ginger pieces - YUM!), and the avacado mixed sorbet... All YUM!
Beware the Dorian cake -- if you like Dorian you'll love it -- if you don't, steer clear!
The wait staff was excellent. Attentive but not too attentive. Suggestions were made with more of a knowledgable palette than a pushy manor.
The service was very poor and rushed. The space is a too barren and airy with little to achieve intimacy (aside from the lighting). I wasn't crazy about the food.
