Critic Reviews

Mercer Kitchen opened in 1998, and one of its attractions then is an attraction now: an underground space that looks like an improbably sexy rathskeller. Its darkness blurs flaws, making the food, like the diners, seem more appetizing. - Frank Bruni

This is less an example of back-to-basics cooking than it is a lesson in how a few ingredients, perfectly balanced, can create flavors that are lucid and compelling. - Hal Rubenstein

The Kitchen leans toward the simple end of the range that Jean-Georges Vongerichten laid out in his book Simple to Spectacular: How to Take One Basic Recipe to Four...

OUTSTANDING--only one bump in the road--had early res and were sent downstairs by upstairs hostess-downstairs hostess was incensed and didn't know how to handle us. Went upstairs to the bar to wait explaining that the downstairs wasn't ready while upstairs hostess continued to send people down. Food was over the top excellent, our server proved to be one of the best albeit her first week! Hostess w/attitude not so much!

Food was decent. Service...OK -- considering we were a large group I think they should have communicated better with us. Dessert -- OK. I think it would be a great lunch spot but I'd go elsewhere in that neighborhood for dinner.
