It's a beautiful, fascinating, frustrating place, its cosmetic showiness echoed by dishes that are also all over the map, in terms of their appeal as well as their geographic and ethnic tethers, and in the way they throw ingredient upon ingredient and seasoning after seasoning at you. - Frank Bruni
Rayuela "means "hopscotch" in Spanish, a reference to Tejada's penchant for grabbing culinary references from around Latin America and the world." - Adam Platt
This Pan-Latin eatery on the LES strives for a ?sexy Miami? vibe, but only partially succeeds. Votives light the path to seductive banquettes, a knotty...
Atmosphere is trendy and the space is designed well but overall the clientele was somewhat questionable. We had a 9:30 reservation and still waited an additional 40 minutes to be seated - while we were waiting we heard everyone around us saying the same some had been there for 1hr past there reservation. When we were finally seated it was at a "table" in the bar area which was open for 30 min before they decided to use it once they realized seats inside were not opening up. This area is clubby loud and super packed with patrons squeezing by and bumping into you as they leave and arrive - not an ideal dining experience and I was not looking to replicate a night in the meatpacking district. After speaking with the host we were informed that this was considered a "regular seat" - I completely disagreed and was told would be another 30 minutes before we could receive another seat in the real part of the restaurant. We would have left the place immediately but were meeting friends in the area and 4 failed attempts to book an acceptable spot at another restaurant at 11pm on Friday night (Inoteca, A Casa Fox, Freemans, Le Pere Pinard). I spoke to the host and manager for a third time and finally received some traction and were seated at an acceptable table that miraculously opened up. Once over this issue the service was really good (only thing that salvaged a 2 star rating on service)the server was very attentive and we received free drinks, apps, and dessert. We eventually pulled it out of the waiter that they are continuing to drastically over book the restaurant just in case they get a lot of cancellations with the current economic situation - the problem is that not many people are cancelling. As people go out less they become increasingly more picky on what they spend their money on - when you go to dinner you do not wanted to be treated like we (and many others) were that night. On a positive note the food was really good, perfectly seasoned, and beautify presented. The skirt steak was outstanding, the ceviche was tasty, and the sweet corn arepa was my personal favorite - I would recommend ordering a multitude of the appetizers over the traditional approach. Although the food was above average the overall experience was a huge disappointment - I do not see myself going back or recommending this place anytime soon.
